Karim Benzema was substituted less than 20 minutes into Real Madrid’s La Liga clash away at Real Sociedad on Saturday night.
The France international went down clutching his knee early on at the Anoeta, and was swiftly replaced by Luka Jovic even after getting back to his feet.
Benzema has been Real Madrid’s best player by far since the 2018 departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, notably enjoying a stellar 2021 and forcing his way into Ballon d’Or contention.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti will be hoping that his main man isn’t on the sidelines for too long. Real’s next game comes at home to Inter in the Champions League, with Los Blancos needing a point in order to secure top spot and a seeded place in the knockout stages.
They then welcome city rivals and reigning champions Atletico Madrid to the Santiago Bernabeu next Sunday in a crucial six-pointer in La Liga’s title race. Real then host Cadiz and travel to Athletic Club before their Christmas break.
Benzema has scored 12 goals and provided seven assists in La Liga so far this season, while also finding the back of the net five times in the Champions League group stage.
The striker has been praised with his link-up with Brazilian winger Vinicius Jr, who is in the form of this life after a rocky couple of seasons in Spain.
Ancelotti may have to rely on Jovic more than hoped in Benzema’s absence – the Serbia international has scored just two goals in 40 games for Real Madrid.
