Ralf Rangnick named as interim Manchester United manager

Manchester United have wasted little time in finding a replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The club confirmed on Monday that Ralf Rangnick, known by most for his impressive work with the Red Bull clubs (Leipzig and Salzburg), is set to become their interim manager for the remainder of this season and will then transition into a consultancy role for another two years.

Rangnick’s first game in charge of United will take place at 2 pm UK time on Sunday vs Crystal Palace.

Mertesacker on Ralf Rangnick

Ahead of Rangnick’s first game as Man United boss, Arsenal’s Per Mertesacker has been discussing his fellow countryman.

Mertesacker – now Arsenal’s academy manager – was handed his professional debut by Rangnick back in 2003.

And though the defender only played two games under Rangnick, the United manager seemingly left a lasting impression on Mertesacker, with the Arsenal man’s comments highlighting Rangnick’s man-management skills and his ability to work well with young players:

“He really cared for a young guy who made a couple of minor mistakes but were crucial in the way forward. I finished my A Levels, put in my all, and then started my career.

“My second appearance was half a year later, so I struggled a lot. ‘When is my next chance going to come?’ He gave me my next chance when it was his last game for Hannover.

“He put me in because he knew this is probably going to be my last game, you’re a young player, and this really helped me when the next appointment came in. You kind of trust the last team that was playing. So he gave me the platform. Ralf was crucial for me, he was an amazing role model.

“Once he was gone, he kind of left me an open field with the knowledge he gave to me. Since then we have always kept in contact.”
