Rangnick’s first XI
A new era began today, with Ralf Rangnick taking charge for the first time at Old Trafford, as the German takes on Patrick Vieira’s resurgent Crystal Palace this afternoon.
Blink, however, and you may have missed it, with an unchanged side named by the incoming boss from the 3-2 win over Arsenal that marked the final game of Michael Carrick’s interim tenure.

Injury to Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with Wan-Bissaka making the bench, meant that both Diogo Dalot and Alex Telles kept their places either side of the centre-backs, while Cristiano Ronaldo passed a late fitness test and leads the line once more.
However, a look to the bench reveals two big names missing.
The pair in question? Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial.
Neither player saw too much game time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Carrick, but certainly Lingard could fit into Rangnick’s high pressing side well.
However, both are absent.
Rangnick explains their exclusion from the matchday squad
Now, taking his first pre-match press conference as Red Devil boss, Ralf Rangnick has offered an explanation for their absences.
And it is far less concerning news for fans of either player, with the German revealing that both “felt pain” during the pre-match training session on Saturday, meaning that they were unable to join up with the squad today.

With such a hectic festive schedule (United have six more games in December after this), both could yet play a huge part in Rangnick’s side.
Both, however, will have to wait.
