Leeds United have reportedly joined the race to sign Aaron Ramsey from Juventus, although two Premier League rivals are already established in the battle.
Ramsey has suffered a fall from grace since leaving Arsenal for Juventus in 2019. It was meant to be a move that would see him prove himself further at the elite level. However, things have not gone to plan.
Injury issues aside, the Wales international has not been able to hold down a regular spot in the Juventus lineup. He is out of favour under their current boss Massimiliano Allegri.
Due to his high wages, Juventus are looking to offload him as soon as possible. There have even been rumours of them terminating his contract in January.
Ramsey must have another club lined up, though, and it seems several sides in the Premier League have not forgotten what he did in England in the past.
A recent report named Everton as the favourites to sign the 30-year-old. He also has admirers at newly-rich Newcastle United.
Both those links have been confirmed by Calciomercato.it, who have also added Leeds into the mix to sign him.
Leeds have been looking for a new midfielder for a while. They failed to strengthen the position – at least for the senior side – in the summer. After a tricky start to the season, they could aim to rectify that in the summer.
Despite his drop in standards, a move for Ramsey would still be ambitious. His salary is much higher than the kind Leeds normally pay.
Calciomercato claim the Whites would only be able to take him on loan until the summer, before discussing what to do next later down the line.
Everton, on the other hand, are capable of paying €15m to complete the operation. Likewise, Newcastle can afford Ramsey if they really want him.
Therefore, Leeds’ chances of taking Ramsey will not be the greatest. But it appears there is an interest there.
Elsewhere in the report, Calciomercato rule out a return to Arsenal for Ramsey. He will have to find someone else willing to take him on – but that could still be back in the Premier League.
Leeds have Aaron Ramsey alternatives
Ramsey is not the only midfielder Leeds may be looking at ahead of January. Perhaps some of the other targets are more realistic, too.
For example, late last month, Leeds were listed as one of three suitors for Feyenoord talent Orkun Kokcu.
According to Voetbal International reporter Freek Jansen, Leeds are in a three-horse race for Kokcu.
The Turkey international has spent his entire senior career with Feyenoord. They still have him under contract until 2025, but could lose him sooner.
Jansen revealed that Leeds are looking at the 20-year-old as a potential solution in midfield. They face competition, though, from Serie A side Roma and La Liga outfit Sevilla.
It is not clear how much Feyenoord are looking for in order to sell Kokcu. But they may be bracing themselves for offers coming from a number of directions.
Leeds would have to be convincing in their pitch to Kokcu but remain hopeful of luring him after they considered doing so in the summer.
He is just one of many different ideas to have come up in conversation at Elland Road, though. Leeds will be looking far and wide to rectify an area that has concerned them for a while.
