Liverpool seek squad depth

One of the biggest criticisms thrown Liverpool’s way in recent years has been that they lack squad depth, putting many punters off backing them to win the Premier League title, when squads often matter as much as first XIs.

While they defied the odds in 2019/20 to lift the Premier League, 2020/21 proved those fears accurate, as a defensive crisis saw them drop ground mid-season, and sneak into the top four on the final day of the season.

With the Africa Cup of Nations coming up in January, that depth will once again be tested, with both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane set to jet off to take part, leaving Jurgen Klopp’s side seemingly low in attacking options.

Meanwhile, they are yet to find a good backup to Fabinho either, something that they could look to address this summer, or even sooner.

Liverpool to battle it out for Swiss Star

Now, as per the reliable Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are one of four clubs seeking the signature of defensive midfielder Denis Zakaria.

The Swiss “number 6”, currently at Borussia Monchengladbach, is out of contract in the summer, meaning that he will be free to negotiate with other clubs come the January transfer window.

He could even move then too, should ‘gladbach decide that they would rather cash in for a nominal fee than lose him for free in the summer. However, Klopp and co. will have to fight off the advances of Juventus, Bayern Munich and Barcelona for his services should they be serious about landing him.

Should he arrive, it would represent more of the savvy business that Liverpool have become renowned for.
