Rangnick confirms two Man Utd appointments and is probed about Lingard future

Ralf Rangnick has confirmed he has made two appointments to his backroom staff, but would not open up on the future of midfielder Jesse Lingard.

Rangnick admitted on Friday he had been given the go ahead to add to his staff after Michael Carrick left the club. And the German coach has moved quickly to bring in Sasha Lense and Chris Armas. Lense is a sport scientist, while Armas is an experienced coach.

Armas, 49, worked as an assistant coach at Chicago Fire and New York Red Bulls. He was then promoted to head coach in New York and reached the play-offs twice and worked with Rangnick. He was sacked by Major League Soccer side Toronto FC in July. However, he has no coaching experience in Europe.

Lense is also a former colleague of Rangnick and was recruited by the German to work at RB Leipzig in 2015.

Lense and Armas are both waiting to obtain work permits.

“I’m very happy to work with staff I met last week, they gave me a lot of help,” said Rangnick

“We have decided to bring in a sports psychologist, with Sascha Lense. He’s from Germany, a former second division player. I used to work with him for three years at Leipzig, one year in the year that we won promotion from the second to the first division, with myself, and the following two years when Ralph Hasenhuttl was head coach.

‘It is absolutely logical’

“So we know each other since then. He will be introduced to the team as soon as he has got his visa and work permit. I hope we will have him on board tomorrow or at the latest Thursday.

“Chris Armas used to be the assistant coach at New York Red Bulls under Jesse Marsch, that was five years ago when I first met him. Since then, we have met quite frequently.

“Also in my role as head of global for Red Bull, in the last three years he was the head coach for the New York Red Bulls and Toronto in the MLS. He will again hopefully join our team in the next two days.”

Rangnick would not be drawn on whether he was shocked to find United did not have a sports scientist.

“Actually I don’t know the situation in other clubs. In Germany most clubs has a sports scientist. For me it is absolutely logical.

What does the future hold for Lingard?

“For me it is only a question of logic. Should have an expert for the brain. Not to put them on the red sofa and holding hands with the players, but for helping the players that the brain should assist the body. Everybody in our team should think in the right way,” he said.

The future of Jesse Lingard was then discussed at the news conference, via the Manchester Evening News.

Lingard look set to get only his second start of the season, alongside Donny van de Beek on Wednesday night against Young Boys.

“Everybody has the chance to perform and present themselves. I am happy to give game time to quite a few of them tomorrow.

“Perfect opportunity to get to know the players,” added Rangnick.

“If you win games it is the best tool to regain confidence. The last four games, three wins, one draw. It is about regaining confidence.

“Players have to buy in, I can tell them whatever I want. They need to make my idea of football their own. First step taken then it is about the next ones.”
