West Ham dilemma doubles as summer signing ruled out for three months

West Ham have seen their defensive options diminish further after confirming Kurt Zouma has suffered a hamstring injury.

Zouma picked up the injury during West Ham’s win over Chelsea at the weekend. He went off in the 71st minute of the clash with his former club. Now, he won’t be seen in action until the New Year.

West Ham have confirmed the extent of Zouma’s injury, which may keep him out for around three months.

A club statement said: “West Ham can confirm that Kurt Zouma sustained a hamstring tendon injury during Saturday’s Premier League victory against Chelsea.

“A scan on Monday revealed the damage and the 27-year-old French international defender has already started his recovery programme at Rush Green under the supervision of the medical team.”

It is a major concern for David Moyes, who had already been deprived of Angelo Ogbonna due to an ACL injury.

Issa Diop and Craig Dawson, who started either side of Zouma in a back three against Chelsea, are now the only senior centre-backs available to him.

West Ham have already been looking at their options in the transfer market ahead of January. Now, their need to do so has only increased.

They are trying to sustain a challenge for the European places, while also maintaining their progress in the Europa League. However, they will need more depth to keep their momentum going.

Another player who went off in the game against Chelsea was full-back Ben Johnson. He too has injured his hamstring.

West Ham have confirmed Johnson has begun rehabilitation to return from the low-grade strain.

Moyes will thus have to juggle without a few options for a while until his players are ready to return.

In the meantime, the January transfer window will have a heightened importance for the club.
