Real Madrid could face Messi and Mbappe in the Champions League last 16

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will have to wait until Monday to find out their opponents in the last 16 of the Champions League after both clinched qualification to the knockout stages.

Los Blancos already know that Paris Saint-Germain and Sporting CP are two of their potential opponents, while Atletico could face Manchester City, Ajax, Bayern Munich or Manchester United.

Group A

PSG beat Club Brugge 4-1 on home soil thanks to braces from Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi, while Manchester City had already secured top spot before losing 2-1 away at RB Leipzig on Tuesday, with the Bundesliga side securing a Europa League spot.

Group B

Atletico Madrid snatched second spot after beating Porto 3-1 on the road, with Liverpool finishing top of their group after winning all their games in the group stage. Following their defeat, Porto will participate in the last 32 of the Europa League.

Group C

Ajax finished top of the group after winning all six games, with their striker Sebastien Haller currently being the Champions League’s top scorer. Sporting CP finished second and Borussia Dortmund will play in the Europa League.

Group D

Real Madrid secured top spot with win against Inter, who finished second. Sheriff Tiraspol drop down to the Europa League.

Group E

Bayern Munich have clinched qualification to the last 16, as well as top spot in Group E. Meanwhile, Barcelona‘s last game of the group stage is against the Bavarians in Germany, where they need to match or better Benfica‘s result against Dynamo Kyiv to progress to the next round.

Group F

Manchester United will finish top of the group, with Villarreal and Atalanta facing each other as they look to clinch second spot. The Yellow Submarine need to avoid defeat in Italy to make it through, and they will continue in the Europa League if they lose to La Dea. In the event that Young Boys beat Manchester United and Villarreal win at Atalanta, the Swiss side will finish third.

Chelsea and Juventus have already qualified for the last 16 and it remains to be seen which of the two teams will clinch top spot, while Zenit will continue in the Europa League.
