Champions League group stages reach a conclusion

The Champions League group stages are finally over, and brought with them a hefty amount of drama.

All four English clubs made it through, but there were major shocks as Italian league leaders AC Milan, and European giants Barcelona, were both eliminated, along with German powerhouses Borussia Dortmund.

With the draw to come on Monday 13th December, at 11am, who can the English sides be drawn against for the round of 16 fixtures?

Manchester United

The Red Devils won their group, and will therefore play against a runner up from one of the other groups. However, they cannot be drawn against Chelsea, due to clubs from the same country being unable to play against each other.

As a result, they can be drawn against:

  • Paris Saint Germain
  • Atletico Madrid
  • Sporting Lisbon
  • Inter Milan
  • Benfica
  • Red Bull Salzburg

Chelsea:

Chelsea fell to a disappointing 3-3 draw against Zenit St Petersburg in the final game of their group, handing the winners spot to Juventus in the process.

As a result, they could end up with a much tougher draw, as they can now play all of the teams that topped their groups, aside from the English ones and Juventus.

This leaves:

  • Bayern Munich
  • Real Madrid
  • Ajax
  • Lille

Manchester City:

Pep Guardiola and co. qualified from a tricky group including RB Leipzig and Paris Saint Germain in first place, despite a loss to the German side in matchday six.

This means, as a result, that they can draw one of:

  • Atalanta/Villareal*
  • Atletico Madrid
  • Sporting Lisbon
  • Inter Milan
  • Benfica
  • Red Bull Salzburg

Liverpool:

Liverpool, like Manchester City, came through what on paper looked like a very tough group, which included Atletico Madrid, AC Milan and FC Porto. Unlike Pep Guardiola’s side, however, they had no problems, winning 6 games out of six on their way to topping the four sides, while Atletico snuck through in second place on the final matchday.

So, Liverpool are able to be drawn against:

  • Atalanta/Villareal*
  • Paris Saint Germain
  • Sporting Lisbon
  • Inter Milan
  • Benfica
  • Red Bull Salzburg

Who would you like to see your team drawn against?

*Atalanta vs Villareal was postponed due to snow, and is due to be replayed on 9th December.
