Barcelona want to sign RB Leipzig forward Dani Olmo but may only have £25million to spend next month

Barcelona ‘set their sights on bringing Dani Olmo back to the Nou Camp’ with injuries mounting at the club… but their financial situation could scupper a potential deal as Xavi ‘may only have £26m to spend in January’

  • Dani Olmo left Barcelona as a teenager to join Dinamo Zagreb seven years ago
  • The Catalan giants want to re-sign him from his current club, RB Leipzig
  • The club’s financial situation may mean they can only spend £26m in January
  • This figure is unlikely to be enough to tempt Leipzig to sell Olmo next month

Barcelona reportedly want to bring RB Leipzig attacking midfielder Dani Olmo back to the Nou Camp when the transfer window opens next month.

Olmo came through Barcelona’s academy as a youngster, before departing the club to join Dinamo Zagreb in 2014.

The Spanish giants are now eyeing a reunion with the 23-year-old to bolster their depleted attack, according to El Nacional.

Barcelona boss Xavi is currently without Memphis Depay, Ansu Fati and Martin Braithwaite due to injuries, while Sergio Aguero was forced to retire earlier this month with a heart condition.

Adding Olmo to his squad would provide Xavi with a much-needed option in the final third of the pitch, although the Spanish international has had fitness issues of his own this season, and has only featured four times in the Bundesliga.

One potential stumbling block for this deal going through is Barcelona’s finances. It is understood that Xavi is only going to have £26million to spend in January, and Olmo is expected to cost more than that given that he still has over two years remaining on his contract at Leipzig.

There is also the threat of competition for his signature from Manchester United, who are tracking the forward, but it is believed that Olmo would prefer a return to his homeland over a move to England.

Olmo is not the only attacking player on Barcelona’s wishlist this winter.

The club have also been linked with Edinson Cavani and Ferran Torres, who have struggled for game time in the Premier League this term.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is another reported target after he was stripped of the captain’s armband by Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.

January reinforcements could be crucial for Xavi as he looks to stamp his authority on a team who are down in eighth place in LaLiga, and have been dumped out of the Champions League before Christmas for the first time in over 20 years.
