Barcelona are desperate to offload Samuel Umtiti this month with reports in Spain suggesting that the Catalans have grown frustrated with the defender after he rejected five offers to leave last summer.

The cash-strapped LaLiga giants need to cut their wage bill this month in order to land their targets, with Ferran Torres not yet registered despite his £55million arrival from Man City due to issues with the league’s salary cap.

Barcelona believe that offloading Umtiti and Philippe Coutinho will have a huge effect on easing the strains on the club’s wage bill, and the Brazilian is understood to be willing to move on.

However, former Lyon star Umtiti may be more difficult to sell. Spanish outlet Sport reports that the club are frustrated with the Frenchman after he turned down as many as five offers to leave last summer.

Instead, he pleaded with Joan Laporta to give him one final chance to prove that he can nail down a starting berth, agreeing to leave this month if he failed to do so.

Umtiti has since made just one start for the Catalans, and has received fresh offers from Turkish giants Fenerbahce and one unnamed French side to end his Barcelona misery.

Yet it is reported that Umtiti – a target of Newcastle’s – is holding out for a club that can offer Champions League football. Barcelona chiefs view this as a highly unlikely development, though

Umtiti, who is on a reported £220,000-per-week wage, is understood to be available for £17m, having joined the club for £31m in 2016.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is looking at reinforcements in the January transfer window – the first opportunity for the Toon to buy players since their Saudi-led takeover of the club in October.

Despite being linked with Umtiti, the Magpies have a strong interest in Lille defender Sven Botman, who is viewed as a potential statement signing.
