Gerard Pique has reacted furiously to claims he is Barcelona‘s top earner by publishing his payslip on social media.

The Barcelona defender was accused of clearing €14million (£11.7m) a season from the crisis club, by Catalan television presenter Lluis Canut.

But Pique, who is married to pop star Shakira, revealed on Twitter that half his yearly salary, paid to him in December totalled €2,328,884.39 (£1.94m).

Pique tweeted: ‘People like this are paid by public television to defend their friends. Here is 50% of my salary as of 30 December. Have a bit of respect for yourself.’

On Spanish station TV3, Canut had claimed Pique, on €28m (£23.4m) gross, and fellow veterans Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba on €23m (£19.2m) and €20m (£16.7m) respectively were the club’s top earners.

Barcelona also came out to deny the suggestion. In a statement, the club said: ‘In relation to comments made by Lluis Canut on TV3, Barcelona would like to clarify the following.’

This was followed by three numbered points, which read:

‘1. The information on the salaries of certain first team players has not, in any case, been supplied by the club and its origin is unknown.

‘2. In any case, the amounts referred to in the information are erroneous and do not conform to reality. Furthermore, in the case of the first three players referred to [Pique, Busquets and Alba], it gives fixed amounts which, as the sums involved are based on variables, will possibly never be reached.

‘3. It is also false that the aforementioned players have only deferred their salary. Pique, Busquets and Alba gave up part of their salary when they signed contract renewals last summer.’

Pique, Alba and Busquets all took pay cuts at the start of the season to allow Barcelona to register their summer signings, which included Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia.

Barcelona’s furious statement concluded: ‘We consider it inappropriate, unprofessional and that [Canut] has acted in bad faith by offering this information as truthful.

‘We regret that data of this type is provided because it infringes the personal rights of the players and deserves, when the information is true, confidentiality.’

The cash-strapped Catalans are unable to register new signing Ferran Torres until players are sold or the wage bill is reduced, but it is now likely they may be able to do so, given Phillipe Coutinho has departed to Aston Villa on loan.

In October, it was revealed that Barca were on the verge of bankruptcy when Joan Laporta replaced Josep Bartomeu as president earlier this year.

The economic mire Barcelona find themselves in was laid bare with the club recording a £409million (€481m) loss for last season, with overall debts exceeding £1billion.

Barcelona CEO Ferran Reverter presented a grim picture while releasing the results from a Deloitte audit that started after Laporta arrived in March following the resignation of former chief Bartomeu and his board of directors last year.

Reverter said the audit concluded that ‘there have been serious administrative deficiencies’ during the administration of Bartomeu, who in the past has denied being responsible for the team’s current financial struggles.

‘The new board of directors and its new executive structure encountered an economic and financial situation marked by negative equity and in a situation of technical bankruptcy, if it was a PLC, [the club] would have been dissolved,’ he said.

The club revealed that they lost more than £400m in the 2020-21 campaign after revenue decreased and expenses went up.

The LaLiga outfit’s revenue dropped by 26 per cent with just £537m brought in, compared to £727m the season before as fans were shut out from games with the stadium unable to open, given the Covid crisis.

The club’s expenses rose by 19 per cent from £812million to £1billion, despite making savings through players – including Pique, Busquets and Alaba – agreeing to take hefty pay cuts.

As a result, the club posted £384m worth of debt by June while debts in recent seasons are believed to have already totalled more than £1.1bn.

Reverter said the new administration found debts and future liabilities of £1.12bn.

‘There was no operating cash flow as the club struggled to pay all the salaries,’ he said. ‘There was an urgent need for refinancing.’
