Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is prepared to offer Gavi “50 times more” per week than what he currently earns at Barcelona, as he bids to sign the Nou Camp starlet, claims a report.
The 17-year-old midfielder, who has burst on to the scene this season, is understood to be a target for Klopp. Spanish outlet El Nacional report that Klopp has his eye on the youngster. His 22 appearances this season for Barca have alerted a number of scouts from across Europe to keep tabs on the La Masia graduate.
Gavi is not looking to move from Barcelona, where he has been since he was 12 after moving from Real Betis. In fact “he feels very happy” but external forces could see the player move on.
Barca are in talks to renew the player’s contract, which runs until 2023. The Daily Mail claim Gavi earns just £1,600 a week in Catalonia, but Klopp is preparing to offer the player a deal worth £80,000 a week.
Barca and Gavi’s agents are “far apart” in their talks over money. Gavi though is said to be patient as he waits for a resolution. But Barcelona have very little space to manoeuvre financially.
The club have still not registered new signing Ferran Torres from Man City. The cash-strapped LaLiga club have little space on the wage list, although Philippe Coutinho’s exit has given them more space to breathe.
While Barca are trying hard to balance the books, a big contract offer for Gavi is a problem. In that respect if they cannot agree a new deal with the player then they may look to cash in.
Gavi has a €50m buyout clause and they may have no option but to sell him in the summer. And Liverpool are one of the clubs who are prepared to put the money up for the youngster.
Man City hold Gavi interest
Klopp has reportedly told the Liverpool board to go and land the Spain international. And what’s more he has rubber-stamped a salary 50x his existing wage packet at the Camp Nou.
Man City are also reportedly keeping tabs on the Barca man.
The two clubs have been involved in three transfers since the summer. Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia left for the Nou Camp on July 1 after the expiry of their Man City contracts.
While the most recent deal between Man City and Barcelona saw Torres move to Spain for £46.3m on December 28.
The Daily Mail, who cite reports in Spain, claim Pep Guardiola is an admirer of his talent.
