Newcastle keen to strengthen in defence
Newcastle are keen to strengthen their defence as they look for Premier League survival after finding themselves under new ownership midway through the season.
In Kieran Trippier, they have already begun this process, but they are now looking to add a centre back (or even two) in the not too distant future.
✍️ Newcastle United are delighted to announce the signing of Kieran Trippier from Atlético Madrid on a two-and-a-half-year deal!
Welcome, @trippier2!

And two names heavily linked are those of Lille’s Sven Botman and Sevilla’s Diego Carlos, both of whom the Magpies have seen bids knocked back for.
🚨 Newcastle intensifying efforts to sign both Sven Botman & Diego Carlos. Carlos may be easier but #NUFC won’t pay silly money for a 28yo. Botman is top target. Badiashile among back-ups. Also want striker + midfielder. W/ @ChrisDHWaugh for @TheAthleticUK https://t.co/UbfbdYigL1

Meanwhile, the Athletic revealed that:
“Should Botman prove unattainable, Newcastle may turn their attentions to Monaco’s promising 20-year-old Benoit Badiashile”
But will he still be there?
Backups bought up from underneath them?
Now, news is emerging from France that Wolves have tabled a 30 million euro bid for Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile.
Once linked with Manchester United, the 20-year-old Monaco man remains in high demand across the Premier League, with West Ham United also keen to join any potential bidding war, as per the report.

Should Newcastle fail to land either Botman or Carlos, they may soon find that those they had earmarked as backups have been bought up, with young defenders always in high demand, and several clubs in the Premier League needing defensive reinforcements this January.
