Newcastle United’s capture of Kieran Trippier is just the start of a hectic month at Newcastle, with pundit Noel Whelan tipping the Magpies to secure “three of four more” breathtaking signings.
Eddie Howe’s side kicked off their January window with the capture of Kieran Trippier. The full-back arrives in a deal from Atletico Madrid on the highest contract in Newcastle United’s history. However, that is expected to be the first of many for the Toon.
Indeed, very much hope of Howe’s agenda is strengthening his central defence and his attack. With regards a defender, they have submitted an improved second bid for a highly-rated Ligue 1 star.
As for a striker, they have been linked with a number of names. To that end, Brazil striker Gabriel Barbosa is emerging as a potential option.
However, the Magpies may instead look closer to home. Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is reportedly one man in the frame.
Whoever they sign though, it promises to be an exciting and season-defining period for the Magpies.
As such, Whelan reckons Newcastle fans can expect some more statement signings to be brought in before the window shuts.
“I think they need another three or four of those players, to be quite honest with you,” he told Football Insider.
“But it’s a start and it shows their intentions in January that they’ll do anything possible to get out of the mess that they’re in at the bottom.
“I think it will send out a message to other players there’s a package there that people might enjoy. I also think there’s the question mark over whether you want to play in the Championship.
“There’s lots of things about. The packages Newcastle can put together will be very mouthwatering and tempting.
“But at the same time, you’ve got to think about what if it doesn’t work out? What if we are in the Championship next year, do players want to play there?
“There’s a question mark over what calibre of player they can get right now. Better players in the world want to play in the Champions League. They want to be playing for European football.
“So it’s a start, it’s a message out there that their intentions are to bring in better players and put up a fight in the second half of the season.”
Howe denies Trippier, Newcastle claims
Howe, meanwhile, has rejected claims that Trippier has only moved to St James’ due to the huge salary on offer.
“I am really pleased to welcome Kieran to Newcastle United,” Howe said. “I have long admired his abilities and have followed his career. So when the opportunity arose to secure him, we didn’t hesitate.
“A lot of hard work has gone into planning for the January transfer window long before the month began. It is clear in how quickly we have been able to complete this move.
Addressing the perception that Trippier has signed for the money, Howe said: “Kieran hasn’t come for the financial benefits of the contract.
“He’s come for the club and for the challenge that the team faces at the current time. He also sees the longer-term vision, so I think that’s a massive thing for the football club.
“Hopefully with his signing, other players around the world will potentially look at that and share his dream and his vision for what he sees. That’s a big thing for us.”
