With Barcelona desperately searching for a new centre-forward this January, one of the names linked with a Camp Nou arrival has been Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic.
The Serbian has enjoyed a great season so far in Florence, continuing the form he had shown last term as well, and his goals have put him on the radar of all of Europe’s top clubs.
Any deal with likely have to be on Fiorentina‘s terms. Despite their willingness to sell, they’re not considering offers under 70m to 80m million euros, which makes it a hard signing for Barcelona to pull off.
As such, Blaugrana fans won’t be pleased to learn that the club had the chance to sign the striker on loan and then permanently for just 18m euros last summer, but let the opportunity get away from them.
The saga began in August 2020, when Eric Abidal met with the player’s agent Darko Ristic. The latter had a proposal from Fiorentina that Vlahovic would sign for Barcelona on loan for the 2020/21 campaign, with an obligation to buy the player for 18m euros in the summer of 2021.
Vlahovic had been playing well before the COVID-19 pandemic hit and brought world football to a standstill in spring of 2020, but his form dipped at the end of the 2019/20 season. That falloff led to doubts at the Camp Nou and Barcelona decided not to explore the signing.
A year and a half of excellence
Since their decision to not sign him, Vlahovic has been in incredible form for Fiorentina. He has scored 37 Serie A goals since, and looks to be the complete centre-forward that Barcelona could do with having.
Now there’s a lot of competition to sign him, with Arsenal reportedly the most interested in the Serbian for 70m euros.
