Cristiano Ronaldo out injured for Man Utd’s trip to Aston Villa

Manchester United are without Cristiano Ronaldo for their trip to Aston Villa, with the Portuguese superstar not even in Ralf Rangnick’s squad.

Ronaldo had missed Monday’s FA Cup clash at home to Villa with a hip problem and has not made the trip down to Birmingham for Saturday’s Premier League encounter.

Speaking before the match at Villa Park, Rangnick said: “With Cristiano, it’s still the same problem with his hip flexor. He trained yesterday, and I had a conversation with him after [and] he decided that it doesn’t make sense if he’s not fully fit to take the trip here. Hopefully he is available for the game on Wednesday at Brentford.”

There’s also no Marcus Rashford for the Red Devils, who have just eight substitutes available for the game at Villa Park.

Regarding Rashford’s absence, Rangnick added: “Marcus [picked up] a dead leg two days ago in training. At first it didn’t seem to be that bad but overnight it got worse. He couldn’t train yesterday and he didn’t get any better with the treatment he received, so we had to leave him at home.

Scott McTominay and Luke Shaw are suspended for United, leading to recalls for Nemanja Matic and Alex Telles, and there’s a first Premier League start for teenager Anthony Elanga – who signed a new five-year deal at the club shortly before Christmas.

United starting XI: De Gea; Dalot, Lindelof, Varane, Telles; Fred, Matic, Fernandes, Greenwood; Cavani, Elanga
