Manchester United midfielder Fred admits to having enjoyed teasing a teammate over ongoing transfer links – but believes he will now show his true colours during the second half of the season.
The Red Devils are facing more scrutiny following a somewhat underwhelming start to life under interim manager Ralf Rangnick. While results have improved, some observers have criticised their performances.
Indeed, United could easily have lost Monday’s FA Cup third-round tie against Aston Villa. Steven Gerrard’s side were unfortunate not to collect the win after an impressive display.
Before that, though, Newcastle were unlucky not to take all three points, settling for a draw. Norwich were the same, with only Wolves have inflicted a defeat on Rangnick’s side so far.
Reports have claimed that the United players are struggling to adapt to the German’s tactics.
And pundit Jamie Carragher is clearly enjoying their struggles, claiming Rangnick compares to this failed former Liverpool boss.
One player who may well get more minutes though over the second half of the season is Edinson Cavani.
The veteran Uruguayan has probably been the biggest victim of United’s capture Cristiano Ronaldo over the summer. Furthermore, the big-money signing of Jadon Sancho has also seen his game-time dwindle.
As such, it’s no surprise to see a number of suitors try and prise Cavani away from United. The likes of Barcelona and Corinthians are two of his suitors.
However, Cavani has opted to stay until the summer following clear-the-air talks with Rangnick.
However, Brazil player Fred has revealed to ESPN Brasil that he’s joked with Cavani over his links to Corithians.
The United midfielder, a former Internacional star, said: “The other day I joked with him, saying that I had heard something about Corinthians.
“I played with him. He just laughed. He said he still has a contract to fulfil.”
Fred backs Cavani to show United his best
Fred is now backing Cavani to come into his own during the second half of the season.
“He’s a great player, I really like playing with him,” Fred added. “Everyone knows about Cavani’s quality, you know, what a great player he is. He helps our team a lot, a great striker. He runs a lot for us, right, for us. South American player, fierce, right?
“He’s a guy I want to have him for a lot longer, because he’s a guy who helps us a lot.
“I hope he can stay here longer. For sure, I would be very surprised [if Cavani left]. I think he should stay with us at least until the end of the season, which is where his contract ends.”
