Declan Rice’s West Ham future has been the subject of debate for the last few years due to the midfielder’s increasingly impressive displays for the Hammers, and Paul Merson has made his feelings clear that the England international should leave amid serious interest from the premier League’s elite.
The former Arsenal star compared Rice’s level of performance to that of Chelsea star N’Golo Kante, and would be surprised if he was still playing for West Ham next season.
“Declan Rice should strike while the iron’s hot and leave West Ham this summer,” Merson wrote for the Daily Star.
“He’s taken his game to another level this season and is playing like N’Golo Kante now, affecting things at both ends of the pitch.
“I’d be surprised if Declan Rice is playing for West Ham next season. They have completely punched above their weight for months.”
Merson added that Rice’s next destination should be for a Champions League club, naming Chelsea and Manchester United as the likeliest suitors.
“Where could he go? Depends what happens at Chelsea and who buys the club. Manchester United would be a good move, but will they get in the Champions League? That’s where Rice wants to play,” Merson added.
