Naomi Osaka makes mental health revelation after Indian Wells incident

The episode that the Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka lived more than a week ago in Indian Wells was a wake-up call for the athlete, who has spoken about her mental health and how she is taking care of it right after facing that collapse.

Osaka, after winning her first-round match at the Miami Open in two sets, 6-3, 6-4, over Australia’s Astra Sharma, took a moment during her media appearance to talk about her approach with a therapist.

“I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this,” Osaka said, “but I finally started talking to a therapist after Indian Wells.”

Osaka shocked by episode in Indian Wells

The tennis player decided to see a mental health specialist because of her sister’s concern, just after Naomi started crying on the court after a fan interrupted her by yelling “you suck.”

In addition, Osaka received love from the Miami crowd after her win over Sharma.

“Yeah, I mean, honestly, for me, I just did not want to let anything bother me today, no matter what happened”, Osaka said after her WTA Miami Open victory.

“Like the last match that I played was not the greatest memory for me (being heckled by a fan at Indian Wells during her straight sets defeat to Veronika Kudermetova), so I do not know. I just wanted to… I do not… (crowd declare their love for Naomi Osaka and hold up a ‘Go Naomi Osaka!’ poster),” she added.
