Paul Scholes has backtracked after revealing a private conversation with Jesse Lingard and calling the Manchester United dressing room a ‘disaster’.
The Red Devils have lost their last two Premier League games, conceding seven goals in that time. The first defeat was a 4-0 mauling at the hands of Liverpool.
And Ralf Rangnick’s men couldn’t turn their fortunes around when they travelled to Arsenal on Saturday. They lost 3-1, forcing Rangnick to admit the top four is ‘gone’ for Manchester United.
Reacting to the defeat in north London, BT Sport pundit Scholes said: “It’s an absolute mess. It’s a disaster of a dressing room.
“I had a quick chat with Jesse the other day and I’m sure he won’t mind me saying he said the dressing room is just a disaster.”
However, the United legend has backtracked on these comments, and seemingly apologised for throwing Lingard under the bus.
Paul Scholes receives ‘stick’ for comment
While appearing on talkSPORT, he said: “I’ve had a little bit of stick for that. I don’t know why I did it! Honestly, sometimes words just come out your mouth.
“I have spoken to him since and [it’s] probably best I don’t tell you what he said.”
Lingard enjoyed a successful six-month loan spell at West Ham last season. However, since returning to Old Trafford, he has become an outcast once again.
This term, the attacking midfielder has been given just 355 minutes of Premier League football. That works out at just under four full matches.
On Lingard’s situation, Scholes added: “I think Jesse has been treated pretty poorly by the club, to be honest.
“He was ready to sign for Newcastle at one point and West Ham, right at the end of deadline day and he was told he was going to get more minutes.
“That clearly hasn’t happened. He deserves a chance. We all saw what he did at West Ham.
“He’s a really good footballer and can bring goals to a team. With this team playing so poorly as well, for him not to get a chance… I think he’s unfairly treated.
“I think he might suit him [Erik ten Hag] and he might want to keep him. We will see what happens.
“It’s obvious he never wants to leave Manchester United, and if this manager wants him then why wouldn’t he stay?”
