Leeds United look likely to face a battle to retain the services of Elia Caprile with his agent seemingly making clear the young goalkeeper’s ambitions of leaving in the event of relegation.
The Whites brought in the 20-year-old keeper in January 2020, the then-teenager coming through the system at Chievo. However, despite being at the club for well over two years, Caprile is yet to make his first-team debut for Leeds.
However, Leeds coaches do rate Caprile highly and he was allowed to return to his homeland on loan last summer. That saw him making the move to Pro Patria. And it was with the Serie C that Caprile made his professional debut in a match against AlbinoLeffe.
And to underline Leeds’ belief in Caprile, they also tied the young stopper down to a new contract last August before he left.
However, it seems that Caprile is already looking to the long term and dreaming of a move away from Elland Road.
Speaking to Corriere dello Sport, Caprile’s agent has revealed the player fancies a move to Napoli.
Furthermore, his agent suggests that relegation from the Premier League could speed up his departure.
“His father is a true Neapolitan,” agent Graziano Battistini explains.
“Elia is part of an important club like Leeds. We will discuss (his future) with the club at the end of the season. We have not spoken with (Napoli director Cristiano) Giuntoli. Definitely, playing at Napoli is the boy’s dream but it is useless to cause a fuss.
“Elia is at Leeds, which is a great club. They are not well placed in the table. In the case of relegation, all the scenarios change.”
Elia Caprile down the pecking order at Leeds
The keeper is way down Leeds’ pecking order with Illan Meslier the undisputed No 1.
Of course, in the event of relegation, Leeds may find themselves facing a tough battle to retain Meslier’s services. The France U21 goalkeeper is highly regarded with admirers including PSG, Chelsea and Barcelona.
His potential departure would subsequently push Caprile up the Leeds pecking order were he to stay.
The back-up role is currently occupied by Kristoffer Klaesson, the Norwegian arriving at Leeds last summer.
But were Meslier to leave, Klaessen – as things stand – would become the Leeds No 1 and Caprile, No 2.
The young Italian is on a contract at Elland Road until summer 2023, meaning the Whites will have a decision to make on Caprile once again this summer.
