Ibrahimovic’s speech that helped Milan edge closer to Serie A title

AC Milan took an important step towards the Serie A title on Sunday night with a comeback victory away to Hellas Verona and Zlatan Ibrahimovic played an important role in that, with his words not his feet.

Stefano Pioli‘s team edged closer to the Scudetto with a 3-1 win and maintain their two-point lead over Inter (plus goal difference). This means that Milan can afford a draw in one of their two remaining matches, provided they win the other one, of course.

Against Verona, moreover, they showed their character by coming back from Davide Faraoni‘s opener. And although he did not start, Zlatan Ibrahimovic made his contribution on the pitch for a few minutes in the final stretch of the match.

But above all he contributed with his experience to help steady the ship and see the game out. In addition, the Swede once again made the difference with his leadership.

This is how those involved described it at the end of the match. Pioli and Sandro Tonali (scorer of a brace), revealed that Swedish striker gave a speech to his teammates in the dressing room before the match.

“Words that had an impact, that went straight to the heart of those who took to the pitch,” they told Sky Sport Italia.

“Ibra said something nice. ‘With good reason, in Milan they only remember the players who won the Scudetto and the Champions League'” revealed Pioli after the game.

“If we want them to remember us, we have three games.’ Now we have two, so we will have to give everything.”

Shortly afterwards, Tonali confirmed the story on Italian TV.

“Ibra gave us the basis we needed to go and get the three points, which was the most important thing,” said Tonali.

“Now it’s no longer important to play a top game but to win, both things happened in Verona.

“I’m sure Ibra is happy for us, but also for himself.”
