Push Press Workout: Is Military Press better than Push Press?

Pressing weight overhead is one of the best ways to reinforce shoulder mobility and increase your overhead strength, which can be a key part of your fitness programme.

There are different ways to go about that exercise and many are not sure which is best, with there being two common options: the military press (also known as overhead press) and the push press.

The difference between the two exercises is that with the push press, you dip your knees and use the momentum of your body to lift the weight above your head. Because of the whole-body usage, more weight can be lifted this way.

With the military press, it is the same movement but without the dip of the knees. You only use your upper body to lift the weight which puts more focus on the shoulders and triceps.

There are a lot of similarities, too. They both engage your shoulders to help build your deltoids whilst also working your chest and triceps.

Is Military Press better than Push Press?

Choosing what is best for you is dependent upon whether you want to build muscle strength or muscle mass.

The push press is best for creating power and building pure muscle strength. That’s why it is used by those who drive logs and axle bars overhead.

In terms of being more all-encompassing, the push press is ideal for maximum athletic potential. It is used by American football players as they use their whole body in a stance when entering tackles.

For athletes and those interested in cross fit and weightlifting, the push press is better as it gives you a stronger foundation.

For those who are just a regular gym-goer and want to add some size and definition to the body, the military press is easier to do and will add more muscle to the shoulders. It is also a less risky movement as you are lifting less weight than you would with a push press movement.
