When the 2021 NFL season ended, many thought that the first quarterback to change teams would be Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers, his last appearance was in the NFC Championship Game between his team and the eventual champions Los Angeles Rams.
After the loss “Jimmy-G” himself acknowledged that he thought his time with the five-time Super Bowl champion team was over, however, it is now the month of May, the NFL Draft is over, the vast majority of quarterbacks whose names were on the bubble have changed franchises, but Garoppolo is still in San Francisco.
Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury
“After losing to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship Game, the expectation was that the first big piece of business — trading Garoppolo — would happen quickly,” ESPN’s Nick Wagoner wrote Monday. “That was before it was known Garoppolo needed right shoulder surgery, a procedure that wiped out his trade value and put his future in limbo.”
As Wagoner rightly mentions, it’s likely that what has scared off most teams interested in the former New England Patriots quarterback is the shoulder surgery he underwent, he is currently recovering and it won’t be until the start of training camp that he will return to the gridiron.
What is the 49ers’ plan?
“Garoppolo’s shoulder is slated to get the all-clear in late June or early July,” Wagoner said. “At which point the Niners will again seek a trade partner. And though the Niners have said repeatedly they don’t intend to release Garoppolo, it’s still hard to imagine a scenario in which he’s on the roster in Week 1, at least at his current $26.95 million cap number.”
The 49ers’ thinking this offseason is that the team’s starting quarterback this season will be Trey Lance, whom they selected third overall in the 2021 Draft.
