Chris Paul and the Suns campaign to get Brittney Griner back to the U.S.

Over the last 84 days, the entire country has been doing everything they can in order to raise awareness of the situation Brittney Griner is going through. To those who don’t remember, she was caught in Russia with vape cartridges that contained cannabis oil residue and was detained by the government in a delicate moment.

As we all know, Russia is currently leading the invasion of Ukraine and they have become the enemy of the rest of the world. Since the United States are involved in this conflict from the sidelines, Griner has become a prisoner of war without even choosing to do so. We are talking about a professional basketball player who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

As a former Phoenix Mercury star, Griner obviously has all the support from the people in Arizona. But the Phoenix Suns are the team that has been lobbying for her return without a scratch from this hell in Russia. Chris Paul is leading the charge inside the squad by sporting clothes with her face on them and encouraging messages for the world to see.

After Tuesday night’s game, Chris Paul was asked about his clothing and the whole situation with Griner. This is what he said: “This ain’t even just an NBA or WNBA thing. I think everybody just wants her home. [Griner] is a huge part of the community here. We all support her [and] just want to try to get her home as soon as possible.”

Can Brittney Griner return to the United States soon?

Reports from lawyers who are tending to her during her imprisonment have so far reported that the WNBA star is being treated correctly. Although she is still a criminal in the Russian government’s eyes, they know they have a potential prisoner of war if things escalate quickly with the United States Government.

As of now, only public support from public figures and major organizations can do their part and push for Griner’s return. The Suns decided to add an on-court decal with Griner’s initials for the rest of the playoffs in her honor. They all hope this nightmare can end soon and Brittney can get back home in one piece. All 12 WNBA teams have also adepted this decal. Griner’s next hearing is on May 19 and she faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of large-scale transportation of drugs.
