The fortune Coutinho has given up to join Aston Villa: Over 400,000 euros per week

In an age where footballers are said to play solely for the money, Philippe Coutinho‘s move to Aston Villa from Barcelona appears to be a contrasting case, given that he is taking a massive pay cut to join the Premier League side.

Aston Villa completed the 20 million euro signing of Coutinho this week, in what is seen as a bargain for a player of his calibre.

Granted, the Brazilian was on massive wages at Barcelona, earning around 30 million euros per season. But with a contract that lasted until 2023, the midfielder opted to move to Villa for a far lower wage rather than run down his deal with the Blaugrana.

According to The Telegraph, Coutinho will see a 70 percent wage reduction at Villa in comparison to what he was getting at Barcelona.

He has gone from 470,000 pounds a week (553,000 euros gross) to 125,000 pounds (147,000 euros), a cut of just over 400,000 euros a week.

Coutinho put an end to his time at Barcelona, where he never really took off. The most expensive signing in the history of the club leaves the Camp Nou without having succeeded at the Catalan team.

Practically since he arrived in January 2018, his signing had been severely questioned and scrutinised.
