Chelsea have announced that they will take part in the 2022 Women’s International Champions Cup (WICC) alongside Lyon, Portland Thorns and C.F. Monterrey.
The tournament will take place from 17-20 August at Providence Park in Portland ahead of the 2022/23 WSL season, and sees four of the top club sides in world football go toe to toe.
Chelsea will face European and French champions Lyon in the semi finals of the WICC, and the winners will face the victor of the second semi final between NWSL Shield and Challenge Cup winners, Portland Thorns, and Torneo Grita Mexico Apertura 2021 winners, C.F. Monterrey.
The matches will take place as double headers, with the two semi finals on 17 August, and the final and third place playoff on 20 August. The matches will be broadcast on ESPN, and tickets go on sale on 21 June on the ICC website.
“We are really excited to take part in the WICC and relish this unique opportunity for the chance to be crowned the world’s best club team following an unforgettable season and a fantastic summer of football,” said Chelsea boss Emma Hayes. “We can’t wait to see our Blues supporters cheering us on in Portland.”
The WICC first took place in 2018, and has consistently welcomed the very best club sides from across the globe. North Carolina Courage, Lyon, PSG and Manchester City competed in the inaugural tournament, while Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Houston Dash have also since featured.
Portland Thorns are the current holders, having beaten Lyon in the 2021 final.
