Leclerc fastest in FP2 with Perez ahead of Verstappen

Fernando Alonso was a huge surprise in Baku as he put his Alpine fourth fastest in Practice 2 at the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, as Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc topped the timesheet ahead of Red Bull pair Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen.

Many expected the Red Bull cars to dominate on a track well suited to their car, and while they are among the quickest in Baku, Ferrari are a lot closer, or are quicker, with Perez emerging as a real contender for the win, alongside Leclerc and Verstappen.

Leclerc led the way in FP2 from the start, and on the first set of tyres used he had an advantage of just 0.030 seconds over Verstappen.

In the case of Alonso, he was only 0.9 seconds behind the Ferrari of Leclerc, after Alpine brought a raft of upgrades including a new sidepod, and redesigned nose aimed at collecting air and reducing drag.

Those worked fantastically well, as Alonso topped the speed trap at 314km/h.

Carlos Sainz in the second Ferrari found himself down in fifth, one second behind his teammate, though he was the victim of a yellow flag on the last part of his lap.

More Mercedes problems

Lewis Hamilton finished the day in 12th place, again behind Mercedes teammate George Russell who placed seventh, as he made his surprise known on team radio when his first lap was 2.3 seconds behind Leclerc‘s.

His car is one that gives then takes away in F1, and Hamilton is seemingly unable to express himself in the Mercedes W13.
