The New England Revolution will look to strengthen in ‘a few positions’ during the upcoming transfer window, according to head coach and sporting director Bruce Arena.
New England’s coffers have been topped up with the transfer of Polish striker Adam Buksa to Ligue 1 club RC Lens. Buksa follows the likes of Tajon Buchanan and Matt Turner in leaving the 2021 Supporters’ Shield winners for Europe in deals totaling around $24m before add-ons.
The Revs now have some serious money to spend, not to mention an open DP slot to fill with Buksa’s departure, but Arena wasn’t willing to get into the specifics when asked how the club will look to spend their cash when the transfer window reopens in July.
“We will use the next transfer window to hopefully supplement our roster,” Arena told reporters ahead of the Revs’ clash with Sporting Kansas City on Sunday, adding: “There’s a few positions we think we can strengthen. I’m not sure which one or a couple we’ll decide to fill, but we’re actively looking at potential transfer moves for the July window.”
There’s every chance that Buksa’s departure will hurt the Revs in the short term. The 25-year-old scored 35 goals in 73 appearances across all competitions for the Revs and this season alone, has seven strikes to his name in 10 MLS outings.
But Arena has long been preparing for this moment and feels the team will still have enough in the likes of Gustavo Bou and Jozy Altidore.
“We were well aware in the beginning of the year that there was a likelihood of Adam [Buksa] moving on during the summer transfer window,” he revealed. “That was one of the reasons Jozy [Altidore] came to New England, and we felt Jozy was going to need up until June to get fit, so his number is going to get called in the near future, and hopefully it helps bring some positive results for us.
“The return of Gustavo [Bou] is also helpful, so I think we’re in good shape there.”
Altidore has one goal in 12 appearances across all competitions since joining from Toronto FC in the winter, while Bou has one goal in seven outings but has been struggling with a leg injury.
