During an exclusive talk with MARCA, the legendary Pentapichichi, Hugo Sánchez Márquez, confessed to Dan Fridman and Arturo Palafox, the secret for Javier Chicharito Hernández to get one of the last places in Gerardo Tata Martino’s final call-up for the Qatar 2022 World Cup. It is worth remembering that the top scorer of the Mexican National Team has been relegated from the national team since 2019.
Question: Let’s say I am “Chicharito” Hernández, and you are Greg Vanney, the Galaxy’s coach, and you can give me some advice, what would you tell me?
Answer: Hey, Javier, score three goals per game so that “Tata” Martino has to take you to the World Cup.
Question: Would you give one of your trophies as a gift to “Chicharito” with the idea that he would return to the Mexican National Team and find a way to make peace with “Tata” Martino?
Answer: No, rather that he earns it there in the United States, and that he is the top scorer in the United States and that when he has the trophy, he orders a replica and gives it to “Tata” Martino so that he can keep it as a souvenir if he call him or if he doesn’t call him to the World Cup.
He should call “Chicharito” to the World Cup.
Should Mexico support Tata in the World Cup?
Question: Why did Mexico make it to a fifth game with a non-Mexican coach who coached you like Bora Milutinovic?
Answer:Bora Milutinovic was trained in Mexico, he spent so many years in Mexico that we can consider him as if he were a Mexican, he is not Mexican, but almost.
I believe that if Bora had not been the coach of the Mexican National Team, he was not only the coach of Mexico, but of four other World Cup teams and has set a tremendous record.
But yes, I will always defend the idea that the coach has to be a Mexican, and that is the reason why I have opposed to other ideas, but now that Tata Martino has been elected, we will have to support him, because if it goes well for him, it goes well for the Mexican National Team.
But unfortunately, the way we are going, I have certain doubts.
Mexico’s chances at the 2022 Qatar World Cup
Question: After what we have seen in the CONCACAF qualifiers, the famous octagonal and these last few friendlies of the Mexican national team, which unfortunately have not been the best, what is your prediction for Mexico in Qatar 2022?
Answer: I am hopeful that Mexico will qualify to the next round because of the quality and talent of the Mexican players.
Perhaps the last few performances have not convinced us completely, because we notice that we lack a style of play, we lack that forcefulness in terms of being more aggressive, creating goal scoring chances, which we do not create many clear goal scoring chances.
We have a striker, Raúl Jiménez, who has very few chances, because there is no harmony to create dangerous plays. We are not defending well, so all of this is a collective issue, and that is the responsibility of the coaching staff.
So hopefully between now and the World Cup we will correct those details and we can reach the idea of qualifying together with Argentina, because Argentina is the number one favorite in the group, and we Mexicans are the second, the second favorite.
We can surprise by finishing first in the group, why not? Maybe, but we will have to improve in several aspects, and if we correct those mistakes, especially collective ones, and then individual ones, then the form of each one, hopefully they will arrive in a good individual form so that will be a force that will help us to get through the first round first.
Then, God bless us, because if we get France or any of those teams, it will be great to go to the next round.
If we don’t make it to the next round, it would not be pleasant at all.
Question: Who is going to go further in the World Cup, the Mexican or the U.S. team?
Answer: Mexico’s national team.
