Canelo Alvarez made money for Joe Smith, who bet in favor of Dmitry Bivol

Joe Smith Jr. did not doubt at any time that Dmitry Bivol would beat Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, he even bet in favor of the World Boxing Association (WBA) semi-featured champion and won some dollars.

On May 7, Dmitry Bivol defeated Canelo by unanimous decision in Las Vegas to defend his title, a fight that the Russian would win hands down, assured Smith Jr.

Joe Smith’s words

“I figured the fight the way it went. I actually bet (on Bivol). I put some money on it,” the WBO light heavyweight champion told The DAZN Boxing Show.

The American boxer, who will unify his titles this Saturday, recognized Canelo Alvarez as a great fighter, but asserted that Bivol is not the type of fighter the Mexican faces.

“I thought Bivol had a great chance to win the fight just with his style. I think Canelo is used to aggressive guys, guys who constantly try to knock him out, who come forward, whereas Bivol is not that type of guy.”

Joe Smith wants rematch with Bivol and to be undisputed champion

Joe Smith, WBO 175 lbs. champion, will face Russian Artur Beterbiev, WBC and IBF champion, in a unification bout on Saturday. The American wants to leave with all three belts in his possession and then think about a rematch with Bivol.

It was in March 2019 when they faced each other and Bivol won by unanimous decision, the third and last defeat in the career of Smith, who put the Russian in bad conditions on at least two occasions, sure that in a rematch he would concretize what he could not that night.

“I want Bivol, I really do. I want that belt. I want to be the undisputed champion. If I could get that fight, I could beat him, then anything is possible.”
