Nick Cushing sticking with same ‘methodology’ as Ronny Deila in NYCFC role

New York City FC began life under interim head coach Nick Cushing with a 1-1 draw at home to the Colorado Rapids on Sunday.

The reigning MLS Cup champions came into the match off of the shock loss of head coach Ronny Deila, who departed for Belgian side Standard Liege last week. In his absence, former assistant Cushing has taken up the role until the end of the season with a very clear intention: keep on doing the same things that have made NYCFC so successful over the past couple of years.

“We are mid-season and we don’t have a lot of time to start implementing new ways of playing and new ideas,” the 37-year-old Englishman explained after Sunday’s stalemate.

“What we have done has worked for us, we have a methodology in our group and we have worked towards that the last 18 months and it has helped us win MLS Cup and it has helped us with the league position that we have got.”

Even so, Cushing will naturally put his own stamp on NYCFC, even if he intends to stick to Deila’s blueprint. The Cityzens attempted double-figure shots and kept things tight defensively just as they have done throughout their recent 12-game unbeaten run and, on another day, could have walked away with all three points against Colorado.

“I think I just have to be myself. I didn’t try to be Ronny and I also didn’t try to change the way the team plays,” he added. “I was just myself in the way that I talk to players, see the game, and how I felt the game would go. So, I think that’s the key. Just be yourself.”

Brazilian wonderkid Talles Magno was the scorer of NYCFC’s equalizer – his sixth goal of the season across all competitions. He echoed Cushing, not noticing any drastic differences in style or methodology.

“There hasn’t been that many changes throughout the week. We have a very similar style of play that we played under Ronny,” he said. “It’s the same style of play. It’s the same way we defend, it’s the same way we attack. There hasn’t been too drastic of a change between the coaches.”

Up nest for Cushing and NYCFC is a US Open Cup quarter-final clash away at rivals the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday.
