Geelong Cats vs Richmond Tigers Preview

Two familiar foes take to the turf on Saturday afternoon in what is shaping up to be a potential finals preview.

The Cats scraped their way to a less-than-convincing win over West Coast last week following the bye, while the Tigers disposed of their old rivals Carlton in a fourth-quarter thriller.

Richmond has won three of its last five games against Geelong, but recent history does favour that of the Cats after recording the clean sweep last year.

An injury to Noah Balta does leave the Tigers looking vulnerable down back, which has to be of huge concern to coach Damien Hardwick with the Cats forward line featuring two Coleman Medal favourites in Tom Hawkins and Jeremy Cameron.

Diving a little deeper, the Cats have been a much better team around the clearances and stoppages this year, while they’ve also allowed the fewest inside 50s to opposing teams.

You could argue Richmond has been a little more battle-tested in recent weeks with games against Sydney, Port, and Carlton, but it’s hard to ignore the Tigers’ fourth-quarter lull last week after leading the Blues for most of the game.

Geelong’s performance against West Coast was equally concerning, but we’ve come to expect that from them after the bye.

If the Cats are back to their best, especially up forward, they should take this one.
