Gary Lineker, ex-England and Barcelona striker, has said that he suffered racist abuse at the hands of fellow players during his career.
The Match of the Day host made this allegation on a podcast appearance where he detailed how he was a singled out due to his complexion.
“In professional football I suffered that abuse, but I would never name names,” Lineker said on the High Performance podcast.
“If I hadn’t been good at sport, life would have been very different for me and I think I would have been bullied at school.
“I was a bit of a fringe kid anyway. I was small, I was geeky, I had darkish skin and I suffered racist abuse even though I’m as English as anyone else.
“I suffered that kind of nonsense and it was a bit weird.
“Other people may not be able to handle these situations. I always had strength. It never really affected me.”
