After fighting across social media, Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia appear ready to finally settle their rivalry in the ring.
In November, Davis, the WBA (Regular) lightweight champion, and Garcia announced that they would fight one another on their social media platforms. The bout is considered one of the biggest fights in boxing between two young stars. Davis even confirmed he signed a contract for the fight, and a rumored date of April 15 was brought up.
However, there were some hurdles to clear. Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions requested a deadline for Martin Luther King Jr. Day for Premier Boxing Champions and Davis to hand over a signed contract. If not, the fight was off.

A contract was sent not long after De La Hoya’s request, seemingly confirming that Davis and Garcia will fight one another on April 15. De La Hoya posed with Garcia and the contract, with smiles from both men. The caption read:
“Devil is in the details. April 15 let’s go!!!”
Yahoo Sports confirmed that Golden Boy has received the contract and that lawyers were looking through it.
Outside the contract, fight fans had to wait for both men to be ready for that April date. Davis defended the WBA title against Hector Luis Garcia at the beginning of January, beating him via TKO. Garcia was rumored to face Mercito Gesta at the end of January but opted to forgo a fight to prepare for Davis.
ESPN’s Mike Coppinger reported that the bout would be a 136-pound catchweight clash, meaning Davis’ WBA (Regular) lightweight title wouldn’t be on the line.

One other hurdle was recently taken care of. Davis recently appeared in court over his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run incident in November 2020. He pled guilty to four traffic offenses. With a judge rejecting a plea agreement, Davis will be sentenced on May 5. He is facing 14 charges after being accused of fleeing the scene of an accident that involved multiple people, including a pregnant woman.
Davis could face up to seven years in prison over the incident if charged. However, that will not affect the Garcia fight.
February 7, 2023: Per Mike Coppinger, the makings of a fight is at a standstill as a result of a dispute over a rematch clause. A rematch clause would only be triggered by Davis if he loses. As a result of that, there is a debate whether the network of Davis (PBC/Showtime) or Garcia (Golden Boy/DAZN) would own the rights to the bout.
De La Hoya and Golden Boy are arguing that their side should own rights to a rematch if Garcia wins, while Al Haymon and PBC believe they should hold the rights to both fights.
“We’re literally down at the 1-yard line; what’s holding everything up is the rematch clause,” De La Hoya told ESPN. “It’s only fair if Ryan wins, then our side controls everything as the A-side. This is just the way it always has been. … It’s common sense that whoever wins is the A-side. That’s the bottom line. We’re not reinventing the wheel here.”

Per DAZN’s Joe Markowski, the fight will air on Showtime PPV, with DAZN in the mix. It is unknown if the fight would air on DAZN PPV.
