It’s been a long wait for Jerry Jones. Ahead of their 28th attempt since their last Super Bowl, the Dallas Cowboys are making some brainy moves. Mainly to clear up cap space to make a significant impact during free agency. But also to solidify Dak Prescott as the franchise quarterback. Is there a plan for the star QB?
Prescott, who hasn’t brought any postseason success to Arlington yet, has two years left on his existing contract. However, Jones’ son and Cowboys executive vice-president, Stephen, has some tricks up his sleeves. A contract restructuring for the QB could keep Dak happy and simultaneously help Dallas land a desirable free agent.
A Dak Prescott extension is in the planning
According to Stephen Jones’ conversations with ESPN from the Indianapolis scouting combine, Dak Prescott is the one to lead them to the coveted sixth Lombardi. “We know what he’s about. His leadership skills are undeniable. Impeccable work ethic. Other than he hadn’t won some key playoff games, he’s everything you want in a quarterback. From the day he walked in the door, he’s won a lot of games. We just got to get over the hump,” he said.

Prescott, in his seven seasons behind the Cowboys line, has only managed a 2-4 losing record, never making it past the divisional round. And after coming off possibly the worst season of his NFL career with a league-leading 15 interceptions, Stephen and father Jerry’s faith in their QB is perplexing. Prescott’s 15 picks came despite him missing 5 games in the season from a broken thumb injury.

“We’ve got to have a plan to ultimately extend Dak,” Stephen said, regardless. And this has mainly to do with clearing up some cap room. Prescott is scheduled to make $49.2 million in 2023, as a part of his 4-year $160 million extension from 2021. However, a restructuring can free up nearly $22 million, as per Todd Archer’s report from the ESPN desk.
The Dallas Cowboys are revamping their offense
And Stephen may finally steer the Dallas ship towards the Super Bowl shore. The Cowboys could really use the cap space with a negative $7.5 million available ahead of the free agency. America’s Team houses one of the strongest defenses in the league. DC Dan Quinn, Micah Parsons, Trevon Diggs, and DeMarcus Lawrence are manning the ship pretty well. The problem lies in the offense.
Running back Ezekiel Elliott with his $16 million cap hit in 2023 is probably up for a trade or a salary cut negotiation. And the Cowboys will put their attention towards Pro Bowler Tony Pollard, who enters free agency after a 1000-yard rushing season. Then there is tight end Dalton Schultz, who is also entering free agency after a year on the franchise tag.

“Offensively, we’ve just got to have, maybe add a playmaker to it. Add a little juice,” Jones said. Can Dak help Stephen Jones do what father Jerry couldn’t?
