Chelsea vs Borussia Dortmund lineups, starting 11s and team news for Champions League Round of 16 second leg

Chelsea’s final chance of silverware this season relies on them turning around a 1-0 first leg deficit against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 on Tuesday.

It’s been a season to forget so far for the Blues under manager Graham Potter and this game could well determine his future at Stamford Bridge.

Both sides will come into this second leg without a number of players making it a difficult tie to predict both on the pitch and the teamsheet.

Playing at home and on the back of a much-needed Premier League win, Chelsea will hope they can find the necessary edge somewhere to send Dortmund packing.

Unfortunately for Potter, he will have to make do without a number of key Chelsea players for this match.

Veteran defender Thiago Silva was the latest to go down with a knee injury which will keep him sidelined for some time.

Cesar Azpilicueta remains sidelined with a concussion, Mason Mount is suspended and Reece James is a doubt due to a tight hamstring.

N’Golo Kante has returned to training but is building back fitness before making a return to match play.

Edouard Mendy remains out with a broken finger, while Armando Broja is out for the season with a torn ACL.

In good news for the Blues, Christian Pulisic has been included in Potter’s squad despite not featuring since January due to a knee injury.

Dortmund are flying but do have injury concerns to deal with. Most notably, Karim Adeyemi was in great form before succumbing to a hamstring injury that will keep him out for another few weeks.

Donyell Malen just went down with an ankle injury, while Youssoufa Moukoko is dealing with one too.

Mateu MoreyGregor KobelAbdoulaye Kamara, and Julien Duranville are all ruled out as well.

Julian Ryerson is fit but will miss the second leg through suspension after picking up three yellow cards in the competition.

Chelsea starting 11

Chelsea starting XI (4-2-3-1): Kepa (GK) — James, Fofana, Koulibaly, Chilwell — Loftus-Cheek, Fernandez — Ziyech, Felix, Mudryk — Havertz

  • Injured: Silva, Azpilicueta, Kante, Mendy, Broja
  • Suspended: Mount

Potter went with a 3-4-3 formation against Leeds last time out and there’s every chance he could stick with it which would see Chilwell shifted into midfield.

Both Hakim Ziyech and Mykhailo Mudryk stayed on the bench in that Leeds game suggesting they were saved for this mid-week contest. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also looms as a potential wildcard in attack should Chelsea need him.

Dortmund starting 11

Dortmund starting XI (4-1-4-1): Meyer (GK) — Wolf, Sule, Schlotterbeck, Guerreiro — Can — Brandt, Bellingham, Ozcan, Reus — Haller

  • Injured: Adeyemi, Morey, Kobel, Kamara, Duranville, Malen, Moukoko
  • Suspended: Ryerson

On an 11-game winning run, it’s hard to see Edin Terzic shaking up the team formula too much for this one, though it’s possible Dortmund could go for a slightly more defensive 4-5-1 shape.

Marco Reus has replaced the injury Karim Adeyemi on the left wing, while Sebastien Haller has led the line across the past few matches. Raphael Guerreiro is expected to replace the suspended Julian Ryerson at left-back.
