Maple Leafs’ Tavares fined for slashing Oilers’ Desharnais

Toronto’s John Tavares got more than just a two-minute penalty for slashing Edmonton’s Vincent Desharnais on Saturday night.

The Maple Leafs’ captain was assessed a $5,000 fine — the maximum allowed by the league’s collective bargaining agreement — on Sunday for the act.

The play happened 3:41 into the third period when the two clashed in front of the Oilers’ net.

The Edmonton defenceman cross-checked Tavares repeatedly, and the Toronto veteran responded by slashing Desharnais across the wrist.

Both were assessed minor penalties on the play.

“Obviously, I’ve got to be better in that scenario,” Tavares said Sunday. “Control your emotions better and that’s on me.”

Tavares, 32, is earning $11 million this season, in the fifth year of a seven-year, $77 million deal.

The Maple Leafs won the game 7-4 with Tavares scoring twice in the second period including the eventual game-winning goal.
