Is this the most wide open NCAA Tournament in recent memory?
The usual suspects are still there, yes — the likes of Kansas, Gonzaga, Arizona and others will never be out of the picture — but traditional powers such as Duke, Kentucky and North Carolina (if they even make March Madness) have not seemed like the world beaters of years past.
The top of the college basketball rankings have been rife with losses all season long, as well. Some of the top teams in the country in Alabama, Kansas, Purdue and more have lost several games over the final month of the regular season leading into the tournament. All that to say: This NCAA Tournament could truly demonstrate how mad March can be this year.
That’s not even including the storylines that will dominate this year’s tournament, including whether Bill Self’s Kansas squad can become the first repeat champion since Mike Krzyzewski led Duke to titles in 1991 and 1992. Speaking of the Blue Devils, Jon Scheyer will coach his first NCAA Tournament since replacing the legendary Coach K — how his team performs will be of great interest throughout the country.

On the West Coast, Mick Cronin’s UCLA team — soon to be headed to the Big Ten — will look to become the first team from the Pac-12 since Arizona in 1997 to win the NCAA Tournament. Staying in the Pacific Time Zone, Drew Timme will have one final ride with Gonzaga as Mark Few attempts to win his first NCAA Tournament title after falling just short in 2017 and 2021.
Then there’s the Crimson Tide, whose March Madness run will include a cloud over the team after All-American talent Brandon Miller was revealed to be involved in a mid-January shooting death that has seen former teammate Darius Miles charged with capital murder.
