App State vs. Troy betting lines, props, predictions: Mountaineers, Trojans head into Sun Belt Championship riding lengthy winning streaks

Most are familiar with the NCAA rules keeping James Madison out of the Sun Belt Championship Game, but remember that App State beat James Madison in the regular season. Within the current rules, the Mountaineers have earned their spot in the Sun Belt title game.

Troy has no questions about their program and whether they deserve their spot in the championship game. The Trojans won the Sun Belt West division and finished three games better than any other team in the division.

After a 1-2 start and failing to cover a single game against the spread, Troy has won nine times in a row while covering the spread in seven. App State took a little longer into the season to play their best football. The Mountaineers started 3-4 but have now won five matchups in a row, two as underdogs, and covered the spread in four.

Each team’s hot streak helped propel them to the Sun Belt Championship. With the Trojans and Mountaineers playing their best football, the Sun Belt Championship will be one of the most exciting games on Championship Weekend. Sports bettors and fans can watch the contest at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Appalachian State Mountaineers betting news

The Mountaineers are hot right now, having won five in a row. App State has covered the spread in four of the five while averaging 40.4 points and holding opponents to 22.2 points per contest. The only time a Mountaineers opponent has been within one score was their 26-23 upset win as 10-point underdogs over James Madison.

The biggest reason for the Mountaineers’ turnaround in the second half of the season is the play of quarterback Joey Aguilar. The junior QB has been notably better during the Mountaineers’ winning streak.

First seven games for Joey Aguilar:

  • 61% completion percentage
  • 254 passing yards per game
  • 2.2 passing touchdowns per game

Last five games:

  • 66% completion percentage
  • 298 passing yards per game
  • 3.4 passing touchdowns per game

In today’s world of college football, players are quick to transfer to find easy playing time, and fanbases are quick to call for a replacement. It’s refreshing to see that App State stuck with Aquilar and has been rewarded — he has has grown throughout the season and is now playing at an elite level.

The App State defense has also improved significantly throughout the season. After giving up four-plus touchdowns in four of the first seven games, the Mountaineer defense has only given up four or more touchdowns once in their last five times on the field. Troy will need to be careful throwing the ball as App State averages over a pick-a-game defensively with 15 team interceptions.

Troy Trojans betting news

As good as the Mountaineers have been during their winning streak, the Trojans have been equally impressive. Their win streak has stretched to nine in a row, and Troy is more than just beating opponents. They are dominating them, covering the spread in seven of nine, with only one opponent within a touchdown.

Quarterback Gunnar Watson has been excellent this season with 3,147 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and just five interceptions. If Watson has one thing he could improve, it would be his mobility, as he rarely runs the ball and has -87 rushing yards this season. He is an elite passer when the Troy offensive line does a good job of protecting him.

It helps to have one of the best receiving cores in the entire Sun Belt. Troy has four wide receivers with over 400 receiving yards and at least 29 receptions. Jabre Barber is the leader of the unit with 60 receptions for 855 yards and five touchdowns.

The most dangerous player, though, is Chris Lewis, who has 637 yards on just 29 receptions and leads the team with nine touchdown catches. His 22 yards per catch is fourth in all of college football, making him one of the most exciting players in the nation.

App state needs to be careful with the ball — the Troy defense is 12th in the country in fumble recoveries. Not only that, but they have forced 10 fumbles and recovered every one of them. If a team puts the ball on the turf, it is almost a guarantee that the Trojans recover it.

App State vs. Troy prediction: Quarterback battle leads to high-scoring Sun Belt Championship

The Mountaineers and Trojans are playing at their peaks right now, and the Sun Belt Championship could come down to the wire. Even with defensive units that have improved throughout the season, the offenses will lead the way for both teams.

The two quarterbacks will battle it out, with each likely going over 300 yards passing, leading to a very high-scoring contest that could go either way. The difference in the Sun Belt Championship that determines the outcome:

  • The team that avoids second-half turnovers, or
  • Which team has the ball last.

One thing is very likely, and that is there will be plenty of points scored in this one.

Pick: OVER
