The No. 7 Texas Longhorns face off against the No. 18 Oklahoma State Cowboys Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas with the Big 12 Championship on the line. The Longhorns are also in the hunt for a coveted slot in the College Football Playoff, though they’ll need some help from teams in other conference championship games.

The Longhorns are heavy favorites coming into the game, fielding one of their best teams in years this season. Texas is back in the Big 12 title game for the first time since 2018 and, if they win, it would be the Longhorns first conference championship since 2009. It would also be their final Big 12 title, as Texas departs for the SEC next season.

The Longhorns’ sole loss this season was a Week 6 defeat at the hands of the Oklahoma Sooners. They’ve won six straight since, including last week’s 57-7 dismantling of Texas Tech.

Oklahoma State last played for the Big 12 Championship in 2021, a game they lost to Baylor. The Cowboys last won the Big 12 title in 2011. After surprising early season losses to South Alabama and Iowa State, Oklahoma State seemed to right the ship, highlighted by a 27-24 win over Oklahoma. To close the season, after getting blown out by UCF, the Cowboys beat Houston and pulled out a double-OT win over BYU last weekend.

Picks to consider:

  • Texas -15.5. The Longhorns will be hyped up in their home state to win this one by a lot so that if the various CFP scenarios point in their favor, they’ll leave no doubts for the selection committee. Oklahoma State will need star running back Ollie Gordon to have another great game to keep things close, but Texas’ run defense is fourth-best in college football, allowing an average of just 85 yards per game. The Cowboys’ last loss was just three weeks ago, an absolute pummeling against UCF, who put up 45 points and kept Oklahoma State out of the end zone. Texas is quite better than UCF.
  • Over 55.5. Texas averages 34.9 points per game and Oklahoma State averages 30.2 points per game. While the Cowboys have been known to play up or down to their competition this season, the Longhorns’ defense is considerably better than Oklahoma State’s. While the score might end up a bit lopsided, it seems likely it’ll be high.
