Newcastle vs Man United lineups, starting 11s, team news for Premier League match: Rashford available again

Manchester United head to Newcastle on December 2 with both sides counting the cost of injury issues ahead of their meeting at St. James’ Park.

Erik ten Hag’s side find themselves facing potential Champions League elimination after slipping to a 3-3 draw at Galatasaray in midweek with Eddie Howe in a similar situation after Newcastle drew 1-1 at Paris Saint-Germain.

The pair need to win their final Champions League group games — and hope other results go in their favour — to stand a chance of reaching the Round of 16 in 2024.

That pressure is also balanced against lengthy absentee lists for ten Hag and Howe ahead of a busy run of Premier League action in December. The Sporting News looks at the team news and predicted lineups for this one.

Newcastle vs Man United lineups

Howe is set to stick with an unchanged starting line up from the draw in Paris with no updates on the injury front in his squad. Midfielder Sean Longstaff is edging closer to a return, but he is rated doubtful.

Ten Hag’s injury list is slightly shorter than Howe’s, but there is still the likelihood of eight players being absent for the trip to Tyneside, with Marcus Rashford back from suspension. The England star’s return will be a boost for United, but they remain short on numbers in midfield.

Below are the projected starting lineups for both teams ahead of their Premier League match at St. James’ Park on December 2.

Newcastle starting 11

It’s likely that teenage midfielder Lewis Miley will keep his place in midfield, despite Longstaff’s potential return to fitness. The in-form Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon will both start up front.

Newcastle starting lineup (4-3-3): Pope (GK) — Trippier, Lascelles, Schar, Livramento — Joelinton, Guimaraes, Miley — Almiron, Isak, Gordon.

  • Injured: Murphy, Burn, Wilson, Anderson, Botman, Barnes, Willock, Manquillo, Targett, Longstaff (doubtful).
  • Suspended: Tonali

Man United starting 11

Rashford is set to come straight back into the team, with Antony potentially dropping to the bench, as part of a reshuffle from Ten Hag. Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are competing for a start at right-back, while teenager Kobbie Mainoo could return instead of Sofyan Amrabat with Scott McTominay continuing in midfield.

Man United starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Onana (GK) — Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw — McTominay, Mainoo — Rashford, Fernandes, Garnacho — Højlund.

  • Injured: Casemiro, Martinez, Mount, Evans, Eriksen, Malacia, Diallo.
  • Suspended: None.
