Can the Giants make the playoffs? Breakout QB Tommy DeVito has New York hanging onto NFC wild card hopes

10 weeks into the 2023 NFL season, the Giants were looking like they would be tanking for a top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

New York got out to a miserable 2-8 start, starting QB Daniel Jones and backup QB Tyrod Taylor had both gotten hurt and the future was looking bleak for a team that qualified for the playoffs a year ago.

Four weeks later, all of a sudden, third-string QB Tommy DeVito has injected life into the Giants as they have collected three wins in a row and are clinging on to NFC wild card hopes.

DeVito’s miracle run as the interim starting quarterback continued on “Monday Night Football” in Week 14. Jordan Love had led the Packers on what appeared to be a game-winning drive, tossing a go-ahead touchdown to Malik Heath to put Green Bay up by one with 1:33 remaining on the clock. But they left too much time for the man who is now commonly known as “Tommy Cutlets.”

DeVito diced up the Packers’ defense with four straight completions to start the drive, marching the Giants 53 yards into field goal range in a matter of seconds. After a few Saquon Barkley carries to take time off the clock, veteran kicker Randy Bullock buried a 37-yard field goal to put the Giants ahead as time expired.

DeVito’s second game-winning drive and third consecutive win brings New York to 5-8 on the season. But do the Giants still have a shot at the playoffs? The Sporting News takes a closer look below.

Can the Giants make playoffs? NFC wild card race

Believe it or not, the Giants can still make the playoffs with four games remaining.

Winning the NFC East is out of the question with the Cowboys and Eagles sitting atop the division with 10-3 records, but the NFC wild card is still up for grabs.

With a crucial win over the Packers on “Monday Night Football” to advance to 5-8, the Giants are only one game back from the final wild card spot in the conference, but there are five teams ahead of them at 6-7.

DeVito has given the Giants life, throwing for 595 yards, five touchdowns and zero interceptions over the team’s last three wins over the Commanders, Patriots and Packers. New York’s defense has come alive as well, forcing 12 turnovers while only allowing 16.0 points per game in that span.

Giants remaining schedule 2023

Date Week Opponent Time (ET) TV channel

Dec. 25 16 at Eagles (MNF) 4:30 p.m. FOX
Dec. 31 17 vs. Rams 1 p.m. FOX
Jan. 7 18 vs. Eagles TBD TBD

Unfortunately for the Giants’ playoff hopes, they still have both of their matchups with the Eagles remaining on their schedule.

As a result, New York has the second-toughest remaining schedule in the NFL, according to Tankathon.

If the Giants want to sneak into the playoff picture, it would have to start with a win over the 6-7 Saints next week, who are one spot ahead of them. The same goes for their Week 17 meeting with the Rams, who will also be contending for a wild card spot at that time.

Can New York pull off at least one stunning upset over Philadelphia over the final four weeks? The answer to that question will likely determine if it can make the postseason or not.
