Virginia Tech vs. Tulane odds, props, predictions: Point spread swells after Green Wave QB Pratt opts out

Virginia Tech (6-6 SU, 7-5 ATS) and No. 23 Tulane (11-2 SU, 5-8 ATS) collide in the Military Bowl on Dec. 27 without some key players in the fold.

As a middle of the road ACC team, the Hokies became bowl eligible with a 55-17 win over Virginia in the regular season finale. Tulane finished second to SMU in the American Athletic Conference.

Let’s explore Virginia Tech vs. Tulane odds, props, and predictions for the Military Bowl.

Virginia Tech vs. Tulane odds: Point spread, moneyline & total

Virginia Tech opened as a 4.5-point favorite, but the spread ballooned after Tulane QB Michael Pratt decided to go pro and prepare for the Senior Bowl.

Virginia Tech betting news: Hokies coming off a ho-hum regular season

The Hokies struggled to start the season with three losses in their first four games to non-conference foes.

  • Va. Tech 36 Old Dominion 17
  • Purdue 24 Va. Tech 17
  • Rutgers 35 Va. Tech 16
  • Marshall 24 Va. Tech 17

Virginia Tech rebounded to go 5-3 in ACC play but there really wasn’t a signature win on the schedule. In ACC games against ranked teams, the Hokies got blown out by Florida State and Louisville.

The Hokies will have momentum on their side after putting up a season-high 55 points in the win over Virginia. The Hokies are making their third appearance in the Military Bowl. They split the two previous games with Cincinnati.

QB Kyron Drones threw for 1,994 passing yards and 15 touchdowns along with three picks on the year. Drones also rushed for 642 yards and four touchdowns. Keep an eye on RB Bhayshul Tuten, as he rushed for 727 yards and eight touchdowns.

The Hokies will also have their leading receiver in Da’Quan Felton, who had a team-best 667 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.

Virginia Tech finished in the middle of the ACC pack in scoring offense (28.6 ppg) and scoring defense (24.3 ppg). Defensive lineman Antwaun Powell-Ryland registered 9.5 sacks and led the Hokies in tackles for a loss with 13.5.

Tulane betting news: Green Wave rolling again after Cotton Bowl win

Tulane was on a path to a New Year’s Six bowl game until it lost to SMU, 25-14, and fell short of an AAC title. The Green Wave’s only other loss on the season came against Ole Miss, 37-20.

Head coach Willie Fritz left to take the same position at Houston after the regular season. Troy’s Jon Sumrall subsequently replaced Fritz as head coach.

The biggest question now is who’ll replace QB Michael Pratt in the Military Bowl. Pratt had dual-threat abilities with 2,406 passing yards and 22 touchdowns. He added 286 yards on the ground and five rushing TDs.

Redshirt sophomore Justin Ibieta is most likely Pratt’s successor. He’s only made one start and that came against Houston last season. RB Makhi Hughes keyed the rushing attack with an AAC-high 1,290 yards and seven touchdowns. He’ll be counted on more heavily with Pratt out.

When leading receiver Chris Brazzell II entered the transfer portal, Tulane’s situation at wide receiver became even murkier after recent injuries to Lawrence Keys III and Jha’Quan Jackson.

Tulane is opportunistic on defense with 25 turnovers on the season (second nationally) including the third most interceptions at 17. The Green Wave’s +7 turnover margin ranked 13th-best among all FBS schools.

Tulane’s gone 23-4 the past two seasons. Last year, the Green Wave recorded a 46-45 win over USC in the Cotton Bowl. This is a step down in bowl class, and Tulane has a hefty list of players not playing in this game.

Virginia Tech vs. Tulane prediction ATS

There’s been significant line movement toward the Hokies, but consider taking Tulane and the points here despite the number of players who won’t play in the Military Bowl. Va. Tech is only 4-4 ATS as a favorite, and this is too many points in our estimation.

Pick: Green Wave
