Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. George Kambosos: Will IBF lightweight title fight happen in 2024?

George Kambosos has already brought two big world title fights to Australia and another could be on the cards on 2024.

The 30-year-old Australian upset Teofimo Lopez in late 2021 to win the WBA, IBF and WBO world titles at lightweight.

He then lost those belts to WBC champion Devin Haney in June 2022, before the American won the rematch several months later.

Haney retained his undisputed title by narrowly defeating Vasiliy Lomachenko before moving up to super lightweight and vacating his belts at 135-pounds.

That left the rest of the lightweights clamouring for the vacant belts, giving former champions Kambosos and Lomachenko another shot at the title.

Will Vasiliy Lomachenko fight George Kambosos?

When Haney dropped the lightweight belts, Kambosos was in prime position to go for the now-vacant IBF strap.

The Sydneysider is currently ranked second with the sanctioning body, while there is no number one contender after Gustavo Lemos was removed when he badly missed weight.

In third spot is Lomachenko, paving the way for a potential meeting between the pair for the IBF championship.

Bob Arum of Top Rank, who promotes Lomachenko, confirmed negotiations were well underway.

“We’re trying to finalize a world title fight at 135 pounds between Lomachenko and Kambosos,” Arum told Boxing Scene.

“I really believe we’ve made a lot of progress. I believe that fight will happen sometime in April in Australia. I’m looking forward to it. Australia is a great country.”

Where will Lomachenko vs. Kambosos be held?

A host of options have been thrown up as potential landing spots for the bout.

Perth in Western Australia, is considered to be the most likely location, while Adelaide in South Australia has also been linked to the bout.

Kambosos’ home city of Sydney, in which he hasn’t fought since 2016, is also thought to be among the options.

Sunday, April 14, which would be Saturday, April 13 in the US, is currently reported to be the front-runner for the date.
