Luis Suarez joins Inter Miami: Contract, salary, trophies as ex-Barcelona star completes Lionel Messi MLS reunion

Inter Miami continued their Barcelona reunion project with the arrival of Luis Suarez ahead of the 2024 MLS season.

Lionel Messi’s switch to Florida created a wave of focus on Tata Martino’s side with former Blaugrana teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba opting to join him during 2023.

Luis Suarez joins Inter Miami

Luis Suarez was officially announced as a new Inter Miami player on December 22, 2023.

The Uruguay star said: “I’m very happy and excited to take on this new challenge with Inter Miami. I can’t wait to get started, and I’m ready to work to make the dream of winning more titles with this great club a reality. I’m optimistic about what we can achieve together with our shared ambition.

“I will give my all to bring joy to these great fans I’ve heard so much about while I wear Inter Miami colors, and look forward to reuniting with great friends and players. I’m also eager to meet my new teammates and coaches.”

The news of his move did not come as a big surprise. Suarez had dropped major hints over his plan to join Inter Miami at the end of 2023 as his contract at Gremio expired.

The veteran Uruguay international negotiated an early exit from his deal at the Brazilian, citing how the extended season was worsening a long-standing knee injury, and the club agreed to his request.

He wrapped up the 2023 Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A season with 17 league goals as Gremio finished second behind champions Palmeiras. He won the prize for the best player in the league in 2023.

Suarez’s net worth reflects a career spent at the highest level of the game for nearly 20 years. Celebrity Net Worth puts it at $70 million.

When will Luis Suarez make his Inter Miami debut?

Suarez is expected to link up with his new teammates at the start of 2024 as preseason steps up in January.

He is in line to feature during their offseason schedule to get closer to match fitness, with Inter Miami’s first competitive game of the season at home to Real Salt Lake on Wednesday, February 21.

His unofficial debut could be in the friendly match against El Salvador on January 19, 2024.

Messi, Suarez and Neymar: How ‘MSN’ helped Barcelona dominate Spain

Suarez joined Messi and Neymar at Barcelona in 2014, after a superb three-and-a-half-season spell at Liverpool. The trio instantly formed a deadly attack that came to be known as ‘MSN’, reflecting the formation in which they played as it was written on a team sheet (Messi right, Suarez middle, Neymar left).

Following the exit of Tata Martino at the end of the 2013/14 season, the trio shone for three campaigns under Luis Enrique, winning two La Liga titles, three Copas del Rey and the Spanish Supercopa.

Barcelona also won the 2015 UEFA Champions League, completing the treble of league, domestic cup and European title in a single season for the first time since 2009 under Pep Guardiola. They also won the subsequent UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup that year.

Neymar’s decision to join PSG in 2017 broke up the trio, the Brazilian moving to Ligue 1 for a world-record transfer fee of €222 million ($263m). Yet their achievements at Camp Nou were not forgotten.

In 2014/15, during Barca’s treble triumph, ‘MSN’ netted a scarcely believable 122 goals across all competitions. Their combination play and chemistry was immense, with the following season featuring a domestic double, as the goal tally somehow moved up to 131.

It was also the sole campaign were Suarez outscored Messi, with 59 compared to 41, but their final campaign as a trio saw a drop off.

No La Liga or Champions League title ultimately saw Luis Enrique and Neymar both move on as the goal number dropped to 111.

Luis Suarez trophies: Career honours at Barcelona, Liverpool, others

Suarez won the Uruguayan league title in 2006 prior to making the move to Europe to join Ajax.

A key role in an Eredivisie title win in Amsterdam persuaded Liverpool to swoop for him in January 2011 and he scored 82 goals in 122 games on Merseyside.

However, his time at Anfield only yielded an EFL Cup title in 2012, his spectacular individual performances in 2013/14 taking them close to an elusive Premier League title only for Manchester City to win that race by two points.

Suarez was significantly more successful at Barcelona, where he won 13 major titles before moving to Atletico Madrid in 2020, having been pushed out of Barca’s first-team picture by manager Ronald Koeman.

More determined than ever, Suarez scored 21 league goals and Diego Simeone’s side clinched the La Liga title. The striker was seen crying on the pitch following their triumph.

He also won the Campeonato Gaucho and the Recopa Gaucha at Gremio alongside the 2011 Copa America with Uruguay.
