Who plays on Sunday night football tonight? Time, TV channel, schedule for NFL Week 16 game

Tonight’s Sunday Night Football matchup has playoff implications for one side and NFL Draft implications for the other.

The New England Patriots were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs after Week 14 but are in contention for a top three pick in the spring. If the season ended before Week 16, the Patriots would pick No. 2.

The Denver Broncos’ big loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 15 didn’t completely sink their playoff hopes, but it dampened them quite a bit. The Broncos sit at No. 11 in the playoff seedings and need a win plus a few other teams’ losses to sneak into the playoffs. Denver has a 24 percent change to make the postseason, per the New York Times, and would get a seven percent boost with a win in Week 16.

This game features two opposite teams. The Patriots have the worst scoring offense in the NFL with an an average  of 13.3 points per game, while the Broncos have allowed the 30th most points in the league with an average of 25.1 points per game. Alternatively, the Patriots still have a solid defense that allows just 21.6 points per game (16th in the league) while the Broncos have scored just 21.7 points per game (16th in the league).

However, the Broncos had been on the upswing before the buzzsaw that was the Lions this past week. Denver had won six of seven games from Weeks 7-14 with a defense that forced 18 turnovers. The offense still has some work to do, but Russell Wilson has looked better as the season has moved forward while running back Javonte Williams totaled at least 70 yards of offense in six of his past eight games.

The Patriots will look once again to Bailey Zappe under center and potentially another start from veteran running back Ezekiel Elliott behind him. Elliott didn’t look good against the Kansas City Chiefs this past week, but tallied 132 total scrimmage yards and a touchdown in the previous two games. The Patriots will look to keep this game close, at they have in the past six games, if they want a shot at another win.
