Joe Flacco skyrockets up Comeback Player of the Year odds board

The Comeback Player of the Year award is loosely defined as a player who overcomes adversity and returns to playing at a high level. There is no denying that the betting favorite, Damar Hamlin, has overcome some serious adversity.

But one player may have a more compelling argument — Joe Flacco, who finds himself near the top of CPOY odds following a historic night against the Jets.

Here are the latest odds to win Comeback Player of the Year from the top sports betting sites:

There is no arguing that Hamlin has overcome adversity, but there is one aspect of the award’s unofficial definition that he doesn’t meet. Overcoming adversity is key, but the winner is supposed to “return to a remarkable level of performance.”

Hamlin has barely seen the field this year.

Russell Wilson was building a decent case, but getting benched for the last two games will likely take him out of the conversation. Baker Mayfield appears to have found a new home as the starting quarterback for the Buccaneers.

Several players have played well in returning from an injury, i.e., Mathew Stafford, Tua Tagovailoa, Breece Hall, etc.

Then there’s Joe Flacco.

Joe Flacco’s resume covers all the bases for a CPOY winner

Joe Flacco‘s downfall began in 2015, three years after winning Super Bowl 47 and being named Super Bowl MVP.

Injuries limited him to ten games that year; the team went 3-7. After two mediocre seasons in 2016 and 2017, the Ravens chose his successor, Lamar Jackson, in the ’18 NFL Draft. Injuries and poor play opened the door for Jackson to start about midway through the ’18 season.

Flacco bounced around the next few years, starting eight games for Denver in 2019 (2-6) and four for the Jets in 2020 (0-4). During his stay with the Eagles in 2021, he did not play but got traded back to the Jets, where he started one game in 2021 (0-1) and four in 2022 (1-3).

There wasn’t any demand for a quarterback who had not played well in years heading into the 2023 season. Consequently, Flacco had been at home all season when the Browns called him up and signed him to the practice squad on Nov. 20.

That was during Week 11. Injuries forced the Browns to start him in Week 13 vs. the Rams. Cleveland lost that game but has since won four in a row with Flacco at quarterback. In those games, he has thrown for 300+ yards in each and 2+ touchdowns.

He has also thrown at least one interception in each start, but he’s averaging well over 300 yards in those wins and has thrown 11 touchdowns along with seven interceptions.

With the win over the Jets on Thursday Night Football, the Browns have become the first team to qualify for the playoffs while having four quarterbacks make multiple starts.

Bet to consider

Joe Flacco, Comeback Player of the Year

His career was effectively over. He just had to make it official by retiring. But since he hadn’t, he picked up the phone when the Browns called. He now has them in the playoffs.

With how he and the Cleveland defense are playing, they are a threat to win Super Bowl 58.
