The hits keep coming for the Golden State Warriors.

After a disappointing loss to the Nuggets on Thursday, Jan. 4, the Warriors got back by defeating the Pistons on Friday, Jan. 5. In the process, the team lost Chris Paul to a hand injury that will require surgery.

Paul, who was acquired by Golden State in the offseason, was recently re-inserted into the team’s starting lineup. This season, he’s averaging 8.9 points, 7.2 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game.

What is Chris Paul’s injury?

Paul’s injury is a fractured left hand that will require surgery, the Warriors announced on Friday.

Paul appeared to suffer the injury midway through the third quarter of Golden State’s meeting with Detroit on Jan. 5. After missing a 3-pointer, Paul collided with Pistons guard Jaden Ivey in an attempt to rebound his shot.

Paul would be substituted out of the game 30 seconds later and did not return.

How long is Chris Paul out?

Paul is currently slated to undergo surgery during the week of Jan. 8.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Sunday, Jan. 7, that Paul is expected to miss four to six weeks after the procedure. 

This marks the fifth left-hand surgery overall and second in three years for Paul, who underwent surgery on his left wrist following the 2021 NBA Finals. The time Paul misses due to this most recent setback will depend on the severity of the fracture and the type of surgery he undergoes.

At the time of Paul’s injury, the Warriors sit at 17-18 with 16 games until the trade deadline and 19 games until 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend.
